Explanation
The Stasi, officially known as the Ministry for State Security, was the secret police of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and played a crucial role in monitoring and controlling the population. Its primary function was to suppress opposition movements and ensure state security, creating an atmosphere of fear and distrust. The Stasi is a significant symbol of repression in the GDR and is often discussed in the context of German reunification and the examination of the SED dictatorship.
