Explanation

Thuringia was one of the federal states established in the socialist system of the GDR (German Democratic Republic) after World War II. The GDR existed from 1949 to 1990 and included several states that are now part of the Federal Republic of Germany. The reunification of Germany in 1990 brought Thuringia and the other former GDR states back into a unified Germany.
