Explanation

After World War II, Germany was divided into four occupation zones to ensure control over the country and prevent a recurrence of Nazi rule. The United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, France, and the USA each took responsibility for one zone, with the Soviet zone in the east and the western zones in the west. This division ultimately led to the separation of Germany into East and West during the Cold War.
