Explanation
The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was established on October 7, 1949, in response to the political tensions between the Western powers and the Soviet Union after World War II. The founding of the GDR marked the division of Germany into a socialist East and a capitalist West, shaping the geopolitical landscape during the Cold War. This division had profound effects on German society and European politics until the reunification in 1990.
